Artemis Mourat

Artemis Mourat has spent nearly five decades performing, teaching and researching Middle Eastern dance. Her Greek and Turkish heritage encouraged a particular focus on Turkish Oryantal and Romani traditions. She has undertaken field research and combines practical dance instruction with historical and cultural information. Her writings and lectures have helped challenge stereotypes surrounding Turkish and Romani dance. Mourat is especially important to Raqs Atlas because she represents the rare combination of long professional performance experience, systematic historical inquiry and sustained cultural advocacy.
